Argentina’s consumer confidence index edged up to 40.14 in May 2026, representing a monthly increase of 1.26%. Among the sub-indexes, the Macroeconomic Situation component posted the strongest gain, rising 4.46%, followed by Durable Goods and Real Estate, up 0.83%, while the Personal Situation sub-index fell 2.18%. Regionally, confidence increased across all areas, led by Buenos Aires City with a 6.42% rise, followed by Greater Buenos Aires (0.48%) and the Interior (0.10%). The Interior continued to post the highest confidence level at 45.39 points, while Greater Buenos Aires remained the lowest at 37 points. By income level, low-income households recorded a 6.86% increase in confidence, while high-income households posted a 1.68% decline. Still, high-income households continued to show a higher confidence level overall, at 41.86 points versus 37.94 points for low-income households.

Argentina Consumer Confidence Rises Slightly in May

The Kansas City Fed’s Manufacturing Production Index edged down for a second consecutive month to 9 in May 2026 from 10 in April. It is the lowest reading in four months, as durable manufacturing activity growth slowed further, driven by declines in transportation equipment, while nondurable manufacturing activity continued to increase, driven primarily by paper and printing manufacturing. Most month-over-month indexes were positive except for new orders for exports, employee count, and raw material inventories.

US Kansas Fed Manufacturing Slows Again

US energy firms injected 101 billion cubic feet of natural gas into storage  to 2.29 trillion cubic feet on the week that ended May 15th, slightly above market expectations of a 95 bcf build. The elevated sharp build took place despite strong demand for US liquified natural gas from consumers in Europe and Asia, as the US and Iran conflict blockaded LNG tankers from leaving the Persian Gulf with cargoes. Stocks were 1.4% above comparable periods of the previous year, and 6.6% above the current five-year average.

US Natural Gas Stocks Extend Build

Copper futures were at $6.2 per pound, sustaining the pullback from the record high of $6.65 on May 13th as skepticism over a peace agreement in the Middle East maintained energy prices elevated, squeezing demand for manufacturing inputs. Energy prices regained traction as momentary optimism over an agreement between the US and Iran waned, pressuring industrial metals. Still, prices drew support from a rally in artificial intelligence-related technology stocks since the start of May, which strengthened expectations for demand tied to electrification wiring in data centers. Meanwhile, supply from Codelco risked a pullback as the company is targeting roughly $2 billion in cost reductions and additional revenue through the integration of operations across three copper mines, as the company seeks to counter the effects of stagnant production and rising debt levels.
