US gasoline futures rose toward $1.95 per gallon, recovering from recent losses as higher crude feedstock costs and renewed geopolitical risk in the Middle East restored part of the risk premium. Support came from signs of tighter crude balances, with official data showing a weekly draw of about 3.5m barrels and the API pointing to a much larger decline, lifting oil benchmarks and refinery input costs. That support is tempered by comfortable product supply, as US gasoline inventories posted a sizable mid January build of roughly 6m barrels while distillate stocks also surprised to the upside, underscoring ample availability. Meanwhile, OPEC+’s decision to keep output steady in March and expectations of a global surplus next year continue to cap upside potential.

US heating oil futures edged up toward $2.44 per gallon, finding support after recent losses as firmer crude feedstock costs countered a softer near-term demand outlook. Warmer-than-normal forecasts through mid-month continue to limit expectations for additional heating demand, restraining upside momentum. However, higher oil benchmarks have lifted distillate prices as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East rebuilt risk premia and revived concerns over potential supply disruptions and tighter sanctions enforcement. Fundamentals remain constructive: US crude inventories posted another weekly draw of roughly 3.5m barrels, while distillate stocks recorded a sharp ~5.55m barrel draw in the prior week, signalling strong consumption that already materialised during the recent Arctic cold spell.

Heating Oil Tracks Crude Higher

Uruguay’s annual inflation eased to 3.46% in January 2026 from 3.65% in December, the lowest level since August 2005. Prices fell further in clothing and footwear (-3.3% vs -2.6%) and transport (-3.5% vs -1.4%). Inflation also slowed for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.8% vs 4.1%), furniture and household articles (0.9% vs 1.4%), and healthcare (1.7% vs 5.4%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.9%, rebounding from a 0.1% decline in the previous month.

Outside tech, defensive sectors outperformed, with health care gaining support after Amgen surged over 7% on strong earnings. Meanwhile, the ADP report showed private payroll growth slowed to just 22K in January, reinforcing signs of cooling labor demand and offering little support for equities.
