South Korea’s manufacturing Business Survey Index fell to 79 points in September 2026 from 81 in July, indicating a continued deterioration in business conditions. The production index edged down to 89 from 92, while the new orders index fell to 87 from 92. Meanwhile, the inventories index rose to 103 from 100, while the financial situation index deteriorated slightly to 81 from 82. The manufacturing Composite Business Sentiment Index fell 4.3 points to 99.5 in September, while the index for the following month’s outlook also declined 1.4 points to 101.1, pointing to a deterioration in business sentiment.

South Korea Manufacturing Sentiment Weakens

The Dow Jones Index decreased 347 points or 0.67 percent on Monday to close at 51482 points. The decline was led by Boeing (-6.88%), Salesforce (-2.88%) and IBM (-2.09%). On the upside, the strongest performers were P&G (1.91%), Nike (1.82%) and Nvidia (1.76%).

The Ibovespa fell 0.3% to close at 182,991 on Monday amid an unfavorable external backdrop, higher inflation projections and new election polls confirming a tight presidential race. Oil prices resumed their rally after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, renewing concerns that energy-driven inflation could keep interest rates elevated. Yields rose, pressuring credit-sensitive stocks. Major banks fell, with Itaú and Bradesco down 1% each. Meanwhile, the BCB’s Focus survey showed that the market raised its 2026 inflation forecast from 4.92% to 4.99%, while the year-end 2026 Selic forecast remained at 13.5%. A new election poll showed President Lula widening his lead over Flávio Bolsonaro, who is viewed by markets as more fiscally restrictive amid elevated domestic yields and weak business activity. Other notable laggards included Ambev (-0.8%), WEG (-1.9%) and Vivo (-2%). In contrast, Petrobras rose 1.5% and Vale added 0.5%.

Ibovespa Falls as Oil Rally Resumes

The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 0.9% to close at 35,490 as rising oil prices revived inflation concerns. Oil prices resumed their rally after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, renewing concerns that energy-driven inflation shocks could keep interest rates higher for longer. Yields moved higher, pressuring credit-sensitive stocks. Financials posted losses, with CIBC and National Bank down 1% each. Meanwhile, falling gold prices pressured mining shares, with Agnico Eagle tumbling 5.1%, Barrick falling 4.1%, and WPM losing 5%. In contrast, energy producers gained on the oil rebound, with Cenovus rising 0.7% and Suncor up 0.9%. On the data front, Canadian GDP data due Tuesday could offer cues on economic momentum and the Bank of Canada’s future policy path.
