Australia’s 10-year government bond yield fell to around 5% on Tuesday, extending losses from the previous session and moving further away from a recent fifteen-year high, as investors moved to safe-haven assets amid RBA warnings that the Middle East conflict could exacerbate inflationary pressures and weaken economic growth. RBA Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter warned that persistently elevated inflation expectations remain a key risk to the economy. She noted that if these expectations become entrenched, the central bank may need to keep monetary policy tighter for longer and a sharper economic slowdown. Meanwhile, Australia’s Westpac–Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index rose 3.5% mom to 83 in May 2026, rebounding from April’s 2½-year low of 80.1. The improvement was partly supported by temporary government relief from the halving of the fuel excise tax, which helped ease cost-of-living pressures on households already affected by earlier interest rate increases.

Australia 10Y Yield Extends Fall

The Australian dollar slipped to around $0.71 on Tuesday, reversing gains from the previous session after the Reserve Bank of Australia warned that the Middle East conflict could exacerbates inflationary pressures and weakens the economic growth. RBA Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter warned that persistently higher inflation expectations pose a significant risk to the economy, especially if energy price shocks from the conflict continue to feed through. She said policymakers are focused on preventing inflation expectations from becoming entrenched above target, noting this could eventually require tighter policy and a sharper slowdown in activity. On the economic front, Australia’s Westpac–Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index rose 3.5% mom in May to 83, rebounding from April’s 2½-year low of 80.1.  The improvement was partly supported by the government’s temporary halving of the fuel excise tax, which helped cushion households from the impact of earlier interest rate hikes.

Australian Dollar Weakens After RBA Minutes

The TAIEX, Taiwan’s benchmark stock index, fell 522 points, or 1.3%, to 40,369 in morning trade on Tuesday, falling for the third straight session and tracking declines in U.S. futures amid a tech selloff. The broader index touched its lowest level since April 30, mainly weighed down by losses in electronic technology and technology services. The electronic technology sector dropped 1.8%, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which accounts for more than 40% of the market’s total value, down 1.6%. On the other hand, Delta Electronics slumped 4.7% after rising 4.3% a day earlier, while MediaTek continued to decline, plunging 4.4% after shrinking 2.7% on Monday. However, markets anticipated the PBOC’s interest rate decision on Wednesday after disappointing economic data on Monday, while also monitoring developments in the Middle East conflict. Other major losers included ASE Technology Holding (6.2%), Accton Technology Corp (-4.0%), and Wiwynn Corporation (-1.2%).

Taiwan Equities Hit Near 3-Week Lows

Indonesia’s benchmark index slipped 31 points, or 0.5%, to 6,570 in Tuesday morning trade, extending losses for a sixth straight session and hovering near its weakest level since mid-2025. Sentiment was pressured by a retreat in U.S. equity futures, even as reports suggested President Trump postponed a planned strike on Iran. Locally, caution mounted as Bank Indonesia kicked off a two-day policy meeting, with expectations the board will lift rates to 5% after holding steady at 4.75% since last October. Political debate also flared after President Prabowo remarked that villagers are unaffected by rupiah weakness because they do not use U.S. dollars, drawing criticism over the government’s economic sensitivity. Sectoral losses were led by energy, non-cyclicals, and property, though gains in healthcare and cyclicals helped cap declines. Major laggards included Chandra Asri Pacific (-11.2%), Sumber Global Energy (-5.4%), Hartadinata Abadi (-4.2%), and Raharja Energi Cepu (-3.4%).
