The South Korean won traded around 1,355 per dollar, extending gains to its strongest level since early July 2025, as easing expectations for another US rate hike weakened the dollar and lowered Treasury yields. Fed Governor Christopher Waller indicated support for keeping rates steady if inflation continues to cool, prompting markets to reduce the probability of a September hike to around 50% from 63% previously. The 10-year Treasury yield fell after reaching its highest level since November 2023. Additionally, South Korea posted a strong external balance, with the current account recording a $42.08 billion surplus in July, the second-largest monthly surplus on record and the largest ever recorded for July, with semiconductor-led goods exports remaining robust. However, renewed US plans for targeted semiconductor tariffs linked to companies’ domestic production could weigh on the currency outlook, given the importance of chip exports to Korea’s trade balance.

South Korean Won Rises to Over 1-Year High

The Chinese Yuan touched 6.71 against the USD, the highest since February 2023. Over the past 4 weeks, US Dollar Chinese Yuan lost 0.49%, and in the last 12 months, it decreased 5.75%.

Chinese Yuan Hits 3-1/2-year High

US natural gas futures rose to $2.92 per MMBtu on Friday after sliding 1.5% in the previous session, as investors weighed forecasts for hot weather and improving LNG export activity against ample domestic supplies. Hot weather across the continental US kept cooling demand elevated, supporting gas consumption for power generation. At the same time, average gas flows to the nine major LNG export plants rose to 18.3 bcfd in early September, up from 17.2 bcfd in August, as major facilities in Texas returned to full operations after maintenance. The developments coincided with stronger demand for US LNG in Europe and Asia, where buyers are seeking supplies to replenish storage ahead of the winter heating season, amid continued disruptions to LNG flows from the Persian Gulf. Still, abundant domestic supplies are limiting the upside for prices. Gas inventories were 5.2% above their five-year seasonal average, while average production in the Lower 48 states remained at record highs.

US Natural Gas Prices Increase

Corn futures held above $5.10 per bushel, trading near their highest level in more than three years, as concerns over disruptions to Black Sea grain exports added support ahead of the region’s peak corn export season. The peak export window for Black Sea corn begins in October, raising concerns over global supplies as attacks continue to disrupt shipments from Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine accounts for roughly 10-11% of global corn exports, making prolonged disruptions a potential source of tighter supply. Meanwhile, the latest USDA weekly report showed a net reduction of 829,600 metric tons in US corn sales for the 2025/26 marketing year in the week ended August 27, although accumulated exports reached 85.06 million tons, up from 83.49 million a week earlier. Traders are also monitoring US crop prospects ahead of the harvest and await USDA’s updated crop estimates on September 11.
