Bulgaria’s annual inflation rate rose to 5.1% in August 2026 from a four-month low of 4.5% in the previous month, confirming preliminary estimates. Costs increased for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (6.1% vs 5.7% in July), transportation (21.5% vs 14.5%), recreation and culture (7.6% vs 7.5%), restaurants and hotels (9.6% vs 9.3%), and miscellaneous goods and services (5.6% vs 5.3%). Meanwhile, inflation remained steady for housing and utilities (at 5.1%) and furnishings and household equipment (at 0.3%), while prices for clothing and footwear were flat following a 0.4% drop a month earlier. On the other hand, price growth moderated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.8% vs 1.2%), health (3.3% vs 4.0%), education (9.1% vs 9.2%), and information and communication (1.5% vs 1.8%), while declines were recorded for insurance and financial services (-0.3% vs 1.1%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices grew by 0.6% in August, easing from a 0.8% increase in the preceding period.

Bulgaria August Inflation Confirmed at 5.1%

The Central Bank of Armenia raised its benchmark interest rate to 6.75% in September 2026 from 6.5% previously, tightening monetary policy as inflation remained above the Bank’s 3% target. The deposit rate was increased to 5.25%, while the lending rate rose to 8.25%. Annual inflation eased to 4.4% in August from 4.5% in July, marking the lowest level since May, while core inflation edged up to 4.8% from a year earlier. Meanwhile, Armenia’s economy expanded 6.7% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, accelerating from an upwardly revised 5.2% growth in the previous quarter. The rate increase came as the Bank continued to balance persistent inflationary pressures against strong domestic economic activity.

Turkey’s central government budget posted a surplus of TRY 12.9 billion in August 2026, narrowing sharply from a surplus of TRY 96.7 billion in the same month a year earlier. Total expenditures surged 37.8% year-on-year to TRY 1.6 trillion, driven by higher spending on current transfers (+39.0%), personnel costs (+42.0%), social security contributions (+47.9%), purchases of goods and services (+32.6%), and capital expenditures (+17.3%). Non-interest expenditures increased 42.8% to TRY 1.4 trillion, while interest payments rose 9.7% to TRY 197.1 billion. Meanwhile, revenues jumped 28.5% year-on-year to TRY 1.7 trillion, fueled by a 28.1% increase in tax collections to TRY 1.5 trillion, with income tax, corporate income tax, domestic VAT, and import VAT all recording strong growth. As a result, the primary surplus narrowed to TRY 209.9 billion from TRY 276.4 billion a year earlier.
