Imports to Taiwan climbed 38.3% year-on-year to a record peak of USD 58.91 billion, easily exceeding market expectations of 18.1% and accelerating from 6.8% in the previous month. Imports surged for parts of electronic products (63.4%), information, communication, and audio-video products (131.6%), machinery (23.1%), and chemicals (12.1%). Meanwhile, arrivals tumbled for mineral products (-17.8%), particularly petroleum (-42.9%). By origin, arrivals increased the most from Mainland China and Hong Kong (38.1%), ASEAN (70.8%), Korea (69.5%), and Japan (30.8%). In contrast, arrivals from the Middle East plunged 34.7%. Considering the first quarter of 2026, total imports reached USD 142.78 billion, 34.8% higher compared to the same period last year.

Taiwan Imports Climb to Historic Peak

The Hang Seng Index rose 117 points, or 0.6%, to close at 25,893 on Friday, recovering from a brief pullback in the previous session as Hong Kong equities advanced on signs that persistent industrial deflation in China may be easing. Sentiment improved after data indicated a turnaround in factory-gate pricing pressures, with investors viewing the shift as a potential inflection point for corporate earnings and broader economic growth. However, the fragile US-Iran ceasefire came under renewed strain as both sides traded accusations over breaches of commitments, including issues around the Strait of Hormuz, while Israeli strikes in Lebanon further heightened geopolitical tensions ahead of upcoming talks in Pakistan. Most sectors advanced, led by financial and technology stocks. Notable gainers included Semiconductor Manufacturing (4.6%), Guotai Junan International (27.7%), Deepexi Technology (48.8%), Shenzhen Xunce Technology (7.6%), and Geely Automobile Holdings (2.5%).

Hong Kong Stocks Rise as Deflation Pressures Ease

Exports from Taiwan soared 61.8% year-on-year to an all-time high of USD 80.18 billion in March 2026, comfortably surpassing market expectations of 33.2% and accelerating from 20.6% in the previous month. The solid annual growth was primarily driven by a massive 134.5% surge in shipments of information, communication, and audio-video products, alongside parts of electronic products (44%) and machinery (16.3%). In contrast, shipments declined for both base metals and articles of base metal (-7.4%) and chemicals (-2.7%). Export growth was strongest to the US, where shipments skyrocketed 124% following a recent agreement that reduced US tariffs on many Taiwanese goods from 20% to 15%. Shipments also saw notable growth to Mainland China and Hong Kong (27.4%) and ASEAN (59.8%). Considering the first quarter of the year, total exports reached USD 195.74 billion, 51.1% higher compared to the same period last year.

Taiwan Exports Soar to Record High

Italy’s industrial production edged up by 0.1% month-on-month in February 2026, after a 0.6% fall in the previous month but missing market expectations of a 0.5% increase. Gains were recorded in capital goods (1.1%) and intermediate goods (0.2%), while declines were seen in consumer goods (-0.4%) and energy (-4.8%). On a yearly basis, industrial output rose by 0.5%, in line with market forecasts and rebounding from a 0.6% decrease in January. Capital goods posted the strongest growth (4.4%), while intermediate goods increased slightly (0.1%). Meanwhile, consumer goods and energy both declined by 2.1%. Among industries, the biggest gains were recorded in the manufacture of transportation equipment (10.0%), computers, electronics, and optical products (7.8%), and machinery and equipment (5.2%).
