US crude oil inventories rose by 1.786 million barrels in the week ending September 18th, following a substantial 7.14 million-barrel increase in the previous week. Commercial crude oil inventories excluding the SPR have declined by 39 million barrels over the last 23 weeks, but remain nearly 12 million barrels higher for the year. For the week ending September 18th, another 400,000 barrels left the SPR to support commercial inventories, bringing total SPR holdings to 284.6 million barrels. The generally accepted operational minimum for SPR holdings is between 250 million and 300 million barrels. Cushing inventories rose by 2.082 million barrels, after falling by 246,000 barrels in the previous week. US production remained at 13.944 million bpd in the week ending September 11th, up 462,000 bpd from a year earlier. Gasoline inventories fell by 2.16 million barrels, while distillate inventories declined by 2.164 million barrels.

US Crude Inventories Rise 1.79M Barrels

The Ibovespa rose 0.4% to close at 187,423 on prospects for US-Iran talks, rebounding from earlier losses. US President Trump said US officials had a “very good” meeting with Iranian envoys at the UN General Assembly and that another was planned. A senior Iranian official said Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within days if the US eased military pressure and lifted its blockade on Iranian ports. The pullback in the oil rally supported equities. Banks ended mixed, with BB and Santander falling 1.4% and 0.6%, while Bradesco and Itaú rose 1.5% and 0.2%. Petrobras gained 0.7% despite lower oil prices. Vale rose 0.4% after confirming a 30% stake acquisition in Ligga, while Axia gained 1.3%. Copom’s somewhat hawkish minutes kept the index volatile.

Shopify surged 7.4% on news that the company partnered with Meta to enable purchases through Meta’s Muse AI agent using Shop Pay. Financials closed lower after BoC Governor Macklem warned that rate decisions will need to balance slow growth against high energy costs.

TSX Hits Over Two-Week High

The Dow Jones Index dropped 185 points or 0.36 percent on Tuesday to close at 51864 points. Losses were led by Cisco Systems (-4.50%), JPMorgan (-3.35%) and American Express (-2.62%). Offsetting the fall, top gainers were Amgen (4.33%), Home Depot (2.74%) and Honeywell International (2.58%).
