Japan’s industrial production dropped 0.4% mom in March 2026, compared with the flash figure of a 0.5% decline. It was the second straight month of contraction, as external headwinds continued to weigh on the sector. Lower output was recorded for inorganic and organic chemicals (-8.6% vs -3.5% in February), general-purpose and business-oriented machinery (-4.3% vs -0.3%), and petroleum and coal products (-7.7% vs -4.1%). In contrast, production grew for transport equipment, excluding motor vehicles (13.4% vs -7.3%), production machinery (1.4% vs -1.7%), and electronic parts and devices (1.7% vs -3.5%). On an annual basis, output increased 2.4%, picking up from a 0.4% rise in February and marking the fastest pace since June 2025.

Japan Industrial Output Falls Less than Initially Thought

Food prices in Malaysia rose 1.2% year-on-year in April 2026, following a 1.1% increase in the previous month, which had marked the softest rise in six years. Prices continued to climb for meat (0.6% vs 0.9% in March), fish and other seafood (1.2% vs 1.5%), sugar, confectionery and desserts (0.4% vs 0.5%), fruits and nuts (1.8% vs 0.5%), and food away from home (2.6% vs 2.3%). Simultaneously, prices rebounded for oils and fats (0.1% vs -0.2%) and cereals and cereal products (0.2% vs -0.1%). Meantime, inflation for food at home was unchanged from a year earlier after a 0.1% increase in March, while prices remained weak for milk, other dairy products and eggs (-0.9% vs flat reading) and vegetables (-4.7% vs -4.9%).

Malaysia Food Inflation Edges Higher

India’s BSE Sensex opened about 0.4% higher at 75,589 on Tuesday, following gains in the previous session, supported mainly by easing fears over the Iran conflict after US President Trump indicated a possible diplomatic breakthrough with Tehran. Investors reacted to Trump’s remarks that he had paused a planned strike on Tehran after receiving a peace proposal tied to Iran’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, India raised petrol and diesel prices by about 0.90 rupees per litre for the second time in a week, underscoring inflation risks from the recent surge in oil prices. Adani Group shares rose after the US moved to drop fraud charges against Gautam Adani and settle Iran sanctions-related allegations tied to one of his companies. The benchmark was driven higher by gains in technology stocks, with TCS, Infosys, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Oracle, and Persistent rising between 3.4% and 4.5%. On the losing side, Jain Resource (-15.9%), TD PowerSys (-7.4%), and Astral (-4.2%) were the biggest losers.

Sensex Gains for Second Session

The STI Index rose 31 points, or 0.6%, to 5,028 around noon, advancing for the second straight session, mainly supported by gains in technology services, finance, energy minerals, communication, and retail trade. The broader index hit its highest level since February 23, amid easing oil prices after President Trump postponed a planned strike on Iran. Local data also lifted sentiment after Monday's report showed Singapore's non-oil domestic exports grew at the fastest pace since February 2012, supported by robust AI-related demand. However, traders remained cautious ahead of the PBOC’s interest rate decision due Wednesday, following disappointing Chinese economic data released on Monday. Among the top performers were City Developments Limited (3.8%), CapitaLand Investment (2.7%), Singapore Airlines (1.7%), and Singapore Telecommunications (1.2%).
