The USD/JPY pair is flashing vulnerability as intervention risks from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) grow increasingly credible. With the yen hovering near historically weak levels, Japanese authorities have escalated their verbal warnings, and recent FX moves suggest market participants are testing the BoJ’s threshold for action. History tells us when Japan intervenes, the impact can be sharp and sudden—particularly when positioning is stretched, as it is now.

At the same time, while U.S. inflation remains sticky, the Fed’s messaging is leaning more cautious. Any surprise softness in U.S. data—inflation, jobs, or consumption—could prompt markets to reprice rate cuts back in, weighing on U.S. yields and the dollar. That would add downside pressure to USD/JPY, which remains tightly correlated with Treasury yields.

On the Japanese side, the BoJ has finally exited negative rates and is slowly normalizing policy, a structural tailwind for the yen that remains underappreciated.
